Nansengwe Primary School is a local education authority school within Blantyre Rural District, to the north of the city. For a crow, it is a few kilometres from Chiraweni Primary School, south of a town called Lunzu. Being close to a main road made access to visit it easier in poor weather or road conditions. Enrolment is around 2,000 pupils. Since our involvement, results in the National exam have have been better than the National pass rate, which is quite an achievement for a rural school.

Funds sent for educational items have been spent on jotters, pens, textbooks and on remedial classes for pupils who were struggling. It is thought that this resulted in quite a number passing the National exam who might not have done so otherwise.

The borehole which we had drilled three years ago still works well and we paid for maintenance of it. Termites were damaging the wooden roof supports in classrooms, so treatment was arranged and this was successful.

Projects 2019 – 2021

  • Installation of borehole. Water found at 67 metres depth - deeper than usual, so more costly. The nearest borehole was 0.5Km walk away. That is not far but in hot weather, it’s a long way to carry water for 2,000 pupils and Staff.

  • Flashband repairs to all classrooms and teacher house roofs stopped appalling water leaks. This made a vast difference so that classrooms could be used when it was raining, whichcan be days on end in the rainy season and pupils no longer have to wait for rain to stop to sweep out the floods or sit on wet floors. Improved use of classrooms and morale helped improve exam results.

  • Resolution of urgent security issues and replacement of rotten roof support in some teachers' houses

  • Purchase of 394 textbooks helped the big improvement in the exam results..

  • Funding to welder to make 80 of the metal frames into two seater desks

  • 250 best quality plastic chairs purchased.

  • More funds for educational items such as maths sets, portable chalk boards and textbooks.

  • Inadequate toilet facilities for 2000 pupils, two blocks of unuseable W.C.s. Funding to contractor  to unblock drainage of toilets to make  them useable.

  • Doors for all toilet blocks
